Kindergarten Additional Qualification Course

York University - Instructor: Joanne Babalis

This will be a great space for us to share relevant resources and ask questions that are specific to Ontario's new Full-Day Early Learning-Kindergarten Program.

Please remember that everything added to this wiki page especially with regards to planning and assessment must follow individual board and school memos/direction. What is added here is not the "right" way, but rather a starting point to consider.

Here are a few helpful links for FDK:

FDK Key Messages from the York Region District School Board:

  • Assessment for learning: making learning visible (documentation).
  • Comprehensive literacy is not separate from play.
  • Same program that prioritizes literacy, number, and includes social and emotion growth and play.
  • Inquiry-based learning: keeping the curriculum in mind while following the child's interests.
  • Environment as the third teacher (intentionality-space, time, resources).
  • Personalization: large group vs. small groups
  • Generic worksheets/art activities provides limited assessment information on the child's level of understanding.
  • Self-Regulation: Social, emotional, and cognitive self-regulation and the ability to communicate with others are foundational to all forms of learning and have been shown to be best developed in intentional, play-based environments.

Thank you for visiting, and pop back in from time to time to see new updates!
